OUR STORY

The idea and the initial group formed in 2016. It began with a coach whose dream was to have a centre of his very own, and an Edmonton businessman who discovered a personal passion for tennis fifteen years ago, when it transformed his health for the better. The idea of building their own centre was suggested casually at first, but in 2021-22 the project became more clearly defined: IQ Tennis and Pickleball Centre was registered as an NPO in Alberta, and the core IQ Team garnered the support of the City of Edmonton by identifying a huge demand for indoor tennis and pickleball facilities in the city and surrounding areas.

Fast forward to June 2025, and with the help and support of community stakeholders, including the surrounding K-12 schools, Jasper Place Bowl management, other Johnny Bright Sports Park centres, the support of Tennis Canada, Rogers Communication, and also the Province of Alberta, IQTPC is currently coming your way soon:

A Timeline of Our Journey So Far

2016

The idea was first proposed

Just a conversation between friends. . . Head Coach of IQTPC, Ivan Quintero, told the story of how he has been trying to open his own tennis centre for years--even going so far as to break ground in Venezuela, his home country. He had the blueprints and concept drawings, he had the land, and of course he had the vision, which he has kept alive even when the plans in Venezuela didn't work out.

Then he moved to Canada, and, when the moment felt right, he eventually told his story to his friend and now-business partner of IQTPC, whose expertise happened to be in large-scale land development, looking to leave a lasting mark on the city.

2022

IQ Tennis & Pickleball Centre is founded

Years passed after that initial conversation between friends, but in 2022 IQ Tennis and Pickleball Centre was registered as a non-profit organization in Alberta, and from that point on Ivan Quintero's dream was becoming a reality again.

2023

Community Research for Municipal Support

The IQ Team conducted community surveys and found large majority support for more indoor tennis and pickleball facilities.

As of 2022, availability for public indoor tennis specific courts in Calgary was 21 (1 per 76K), Red Deer was 4 (1 per 25 K), and Edmonton was 17 (1 per 100K). Now in 2025, Edmonton’s existing, mostly private tennis clubs continue to operate at capacity, and provide only very limited access for the general public.

2023

IQ Tennis & Pickleball Centre chosen by the City

Following the Expression of Interest project proposal to the City of Edmonton, IQ Tennis & Pickleball Centre was chosen by Edmonton to explore the positive impact to the Meadowlark community by covering the existing tennis courts at Jasper Place with an air-supported dome, to offer Edmontonians an opportunity to enjoy tennis and pickleball year-round.

IQTPC said--and the community and the City agreed--that year-round facility access is crucial for any sports culture in the city to become more than just a summer hobby.

2024

IQTPC Garnered the Support of Partners

The IQ Team is proud of the support received by the Province of Alberta, the City of Edmonton, Tennis Canada, and Rogers Communications.

2025

Constructions Begins!

Construction officially began in May 2025! After a successful and supportive soil-turning ceremony on June 19, 2025, IQTPC continues to be in close contact with many stakeholders in the community, and looks forward to the long-term partnerships with management teams within Johnny Bright Sports Park, and the Meadowlark community.

2025 - and beyond (!)

The story continues

There's much more to come, but here we can say a little more about our centre's ethos...

Our Coaches Make Our Centre

Fueled by an overwhelming passion for both sports which keeps them on the courts at all hours of the day, our coaching team at IQ will be emphasizing competitive, daily junior programming (red, orange, green, and yellow) for all the families and schools in the Meadowlark area.

'Hey! What about adults like me. . ?'

For all players in the community, of all ages and skillsets, our coaches are working hard to design accessible development pathways so that anyone at our centre has the ability to pick up a racquet and discover for themselves the joy and transformation of these sports!
